Being and Nothingness

By Nikki Giovanni

I haven't done anything
meaningful in so long
its almost meaningful
to do nothing

I suppose I could fall in love
or at least in line
since I'm so discontented but that takes effort
and I don't want to exert anything
neither my energy nor my emotions

I've always prided myself
on being a child of the sixties
and we are all finished
so that makes being
nothing

  1. I have mixed feelings about this poem. I like her sarcasm in this one. I guess I picked up on this one because of that. I can relate to it to some extent. It reminds me of when I come home from work (my soul less retail job at Dressbarn that works with my schedule). I feel thankful that I have found what it is that is important in to me in my life. I often wonder about people who feel lost, feel that they have no purpose or that can't find it. Its all a process of self-exploration but its not necessarily easy. I guess this poem struck a cord as I was doing the reading this week and thought about some of my students from student teaching. Not that I feel that they are lost or anything, but I wonder where life has taken them.

  2. Yeah, I totally agree. I mean is working at Red Lobster meaningless? I am on the Green Team there to help save energy and I had a meeting today. Afterward, I was thinking about how much it doesn't really matter to me, and then I felt bad. But seriously, do I really care how much money Red Lobster spends on utilities? No, I care about school and giving students a place in this world that they can feel proud of, but first this pride is essential for us to feel on our part. I can't imagine the feeling of not having a purpose, even if that purpose is not so clear cut. The poem would be interesting to bring into the classroom for students to discuss. I think it would be interesting for to see whether or not students will do something if it isn't meaningful, or if they'll do something because it is. Why do they come to school? Do we make it meaningful for them? What is meaningful in their lives?

  3. I love this idea of taking this poem and asking students to talk about what is meaningful to them and waht they think they do that is "meaningless." I also think it would be interesting to ask the students how we could make school a place where things are meaningful...
